Skills shortage leaves critical US military systems at risk

Posted on July 19th, 2010 in Unemployment News | Comments Off

(From ComputerWeekly.com) US industry, government and military computer systems are at risk of attack, analysts warn. Even US security officials say the country’s cyber defences are inadequate, according to US reports. Cyber security specialists say too few people are moving into the field to support US national security objectives. There is a desperate shortage of people with the necessary skills, according to a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Experts in the field say it takes very skilled people to be able to deal with vulnerabilities in basic technologies as well as the applications built on top of them. Estimates put the number of sufficiently skilled cyber security experts in the US at around 1,000. That is far below the 20,000 to 30,000 the country needs. This is in sharp contrast to China, where the training of cyber experts is a national priority, supported by annual competitions aimed at recruiting youngsters. Read more.

(From the LA Times) Hundreds of low-income and unemployed residents in Los Angeles County are receiving job training and placement at local hospitals, clinics and pharmacies in an ambitious effort that taps into the growing need for healthcare workers. The Youth Policy Institute, a local nonprofit managing the program, opened its doors to applicants in March and has already enrolled about 400 trainees. There is room for 1,200 participants total. “The demand is so great for this,” said Dixon Slingerland, executive director of the institute. “The goal is to get them a job as quickly as possible.” The project is funded by $3.6 million in federal stimulus money and $2.4 million in state and local grants. In defense of games in the workplace

Posted on July 19th, 2010 in Unemployment News | Comments Off

(From O’Reilly Radar) We’re hardwired to play games. We play them for fun. We play them in our social interactions. We play them at work. That last one is tricky. “Games” and “work” don’t seem like a natural pairing. Their coupling in the workplace either implies goofing off (the fun variant) or office politics (the not-so-fun type). Dave Gray, Sunni Brown, and James Macanufo, co-authors of the upcoming book Gamestorming, have a different perspective. They contend that an embrace and understanding of game mechanics can yield benefits in many work environments, particularly those where old hierarchical models are no longer applicable. In the following Q&A, Gray discusses the collaborative power of games and how they can cut through increasing workplace complexity. What is Gamestorming? Dave Gray: Gamestorming is a set of collaboration practices that originated in Silicon Valley in the 1970s and has been evolving ever since. It’s an approach that emphasizes quick, ad-hoc organization of teams so they can rapidly co-design and co-develop ideas. As my co-authors and I observed these practices, they seemed to look more like games than any other form of work we were familiar with. Hence the term “gamestorming.” Read more.
