This image appeared in the October 1991 issue of Training & Development magazine. The article compared an orchestra conductor to a manager of the self-directed work team. According to article authors John H. Zenger, Ed Musselwhite, Kathleen Hurson, and Craig Perrin, “What’s called for now is a different kind of manager–more strategic, more collaborative, more faciliatitve, and more responsive to customers, employees, and organizational imperatives.” Sound familiar? What can two different car maintenance companies teach the rest of us about workplace learning? This year, a lot. In 2011 ASTD presented an Excellence in Practice Award to Midas International (you know, the muffler folks) and a BEST Award to Jiffy Lube International. What impressed the judges in both of these cases was the commitment to L&D that these companies showed in rolling out programs that positively impacted the franchise operators both organizations rely on for overall success. Read on and see if what Midas and Jiffy Lube are doing might have some relevance to your own organization’s L&D efforts. Read about Jiffy Lube in the October issue of T+D .

ASTD’s Employee Learning Week was created as an initiative to raise awareness about the value of employee learning and development and the important role L&D professionals play in organizations. Today marks the last day of Employee Learning Week 2011, but we know it’s not the last day of employee learning! Employee learning is something that happens every day in big ways and small ways. It happens in formal settings and office hallways. It happens via desktop computers, laptops, and mobile devices. It happens whenever someone has a question that needs to be answered. Employee learning and development helps create the highly skilled workforce that is critical to driving growth for organizations. Tony Bingham, ASTD’s President and CEO recently said this to a gathering of learning professionals in Brazil: “It is our people who will create and implement innovative ideas, and form sustainable enterprises throughout the world. In today’s knowledge economy, people are the key differentiator. The best and most strategic leaders make sure they have the right people with the right skills in the right place. And they also make sure they have smart learning and development professionals on board aligning talent to meet the organization’s goals. These are challenging and exciting times for our profession!” To all the learning professionals out there – Happy Employee Learning Week! And thank you for your commitment to creating a world that works better!

This image appeared in the January 1982 issue of Training and Development Journal. The article, by Leslie A. Bryan, Jr., compared the management styles of the Japanese and American first-line supervisor. While Americans value individuality, the bottom line is productivity. The article pointed out that decreasing productivity cannot be blamed entirely on the workers or the supervisors. Government regulations, equipment, and the unskilled labor force can have a negative effect on productivity. What differences do you see in foreign workers and American workers? How do you switch to a new technology and train frontline workers who cannot work overtime, leave their desks for training, or stop their day-to-day activities? That is an issue that still lingers in today’s business environment. The challenge that AVCO Financial Services faced in this September 1977 Training and Development Journal article was implementing the changeover to a computerized system without disrupting business. Can robots do your job? That is a fair question, especially in this new workplace reality where we are all expected to do more with less. This image appeared in the November 1983 issue of Training and Development Journal . Mary Condon wrote in the article titled, “Straight Talk About Robots,” that “the potential for robots to reduce labor costs, improve quality standards, and increase productivity certainly holds promise for reviving U.S. industries that have not been able to match foreign competitors, but this will take time.” Well, it is 29 years later, and most jobs still have humans doing the tasks. Are there jobs in your organization that have been automated? What tasks in your workload could be turned over to robots? How would you train robots to be effective and efficient members of the workforce? For more information about T+D magazine, visit www.astd.org/td .

Today’s image comes from the January-February 1954 Journal of Industrial Training . Today’s image comes from the January-February 1948 issue of The Journal of Industrial Training . This is one panel of the 27 sections of the Federal Training Officers’ Conference exhibit of materials held recently in Washington. Shown, from left to right, are the displays prepared by the Department of Agriculture, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Prisons, and the Johnson and Johnson Company. Twenty-seven of 80 government agencies submitted materials for this exhibit. The goal of the exhibit was to increase interest in workplace training among government officials and to bring together those individuals in government whose particular concern lies in the field of training.
