Corporate America Unites with Community Organizations to Launch “A Million Jobs for America”

Posted on July 22nd, 2010 in Unemployment News | No Comments »

(From Business Wire) — A consortium of the nation’s largest and smallest employers have joined forces to compile a job bank of one million immediate job openings across the country, in an effort to put Americans back to work. As of today, nearly 600,000 jobs have been listed in the job bank, with hundreds more added daily. “A Million Jobs for America™,” which launched today, is corporate America’s response to reversing the high unemployment rate. Employers include some of the largest corporations in America, as well as small and mid-sized firms, who have pledged financial support and, more importantly, their job openings in an effort to stimulate the job market. One unique element of the program is its focus on helping Americans who most need employment: Job openings are distributed directly to veterans groups, disabled individuals, non-profit organizations and state unemployment offices. In turn, employers who hire these qualified candidates may be eligible for federal tax credits, such as Restore Employment Act (HIRE) Credits and Work Opportunity Tax Credits. “Who better than American business to lead the job creation efforts and help get Americans back to work?” asked Mark S. Andrekovich, President of MAXIMUS Tax Credit and Employer Services, the sponsor leading this effort to bring businesses and community organizations together. “ ‘A Million Jobs for America’ is our way of helping reverse the staggering unemployment rate and get Americans back to work,” said Dennis Ratner, Founder and CEO of Ratner Companies, the parent company of Hair Cuttery. “CEOs across the country know that true economic recovery will happen when – and only when – our workforce is back to full capacity.” Read more.

United States funds weatherization training centers

Posted on June 8th, 2010 in Economy, Unemployment News | Comments Off

The U.S. Department of Energy announced today that 34 projects in 27 states have been selected to receive $29 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to develop and expand weatherization training centers across the country. These projects will provide green job training for local workers in energy efficiency retrofitting and weatherization services. With this training, skilled workers can help expand the use of energy efficient practices in America’s homes and businesses. “A well-trained workforce will be a crucial part of America’s clean energy economy in the years ahead,” said Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman. “These investments in efficiency training programs will help build a foundation for long-term growth in America. Energy efficiency improves the competitiveness of our economy, benefits the environment, and puts Americans back to work.” Using innovative approaches to weatherization training and standardized training curricula, these projects will help prepare weatherization workers, supervisors, and inspectors to maintain a high degree of quality in weatherization projects and to work in the growing field of energy efficiency retrofits. The centers and programs will offer training using a combination of classroom, online, and hands-on learning tools. This funding will support the expansion of 8 existing weatherization training centers and the establishment of 26 new training centers, more than tripling the number of DOE-funded weatherization training centers nationally. The 34 programs announced today will significantly expand access to weatherization training, while improving the quality and consistency of training nationwide. These investments will continue to build on the Administration’s efforts to expand the green workforce and build a self-sustaining energy retrofit industry that creates high-quality jobs, while improving the environment and saving energy. Investing In Clean Energy Projects Abroad is Key to Creating Jobs

Posted on May 25th, 2010 in Unemployment News | Comments Off

(From PRWEB) — Putting a price on carbon pollution and investing in clean technology projects in developing countries could create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the US and help America catch up to China and Europe in the clean energy race, according to a new report issued by World Wildlife Fund. WWF’s report highlights a significant, but rarely discussed, economic angle to the Senate’s deliberations on the American Power Act, which was recently introduced by Senators John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.). Unlike the House-passed climate bill, which set aside one percent of revenues from emissions auctions for international clean technology investments, the American Power Act contains no such dedicated funding stream nor a program to guide these public investments. This lack of secure, long-term funding would limit the job-creating potential of the legislation by limiting the opportunities for American companies to export their energy technology to global markets. “We’re leaving jobs on the table that this provision could create,” said Lou Leonard, WWF’s Director of US Climate Policy. “If America wants to have any chance of catching Europe and China in the clean energy race we simply cannot afford to ignore international markets for American clean technologies.” Read more.

Diversity in workplace gets expanded definition

Posted on May 20th, 2010 in Unemployment News | Comments Off

American businesses constantly grapple with issues of workforce diversity and inclusion—and those words usually are shorthand for being more aggressive in the hiring and advancement of women and people of color. But that idea of workplace inclusiveness is becoming more inclusive, too. As a global company, Xerox Corp. is increasingly pushing for an internationalization of its work force, said Manager of Corporate Diversity Ernest L. Hicks. “And religion is the next horizon,” he told a crowd of public relations executives. Hicks was part of a panel discussion Wednesday put on by the Public Relations Society of America’s Rochester chapter regarding workplace diversity. And the discussion by the panelists — Hicks; Kendal H. Tyre, a partner at Nixon Peabody LLP; and Dawn Borgeest, chief corporate affairs officer for the United Way of Greater Rochester — revolved around what those places are doing to improve diversity. Wage gap still looms over workplace

Posted on April 20th, 2010 in Unemployment News | Comments Off

In America today, women earn 22 percent less in wages than men every year. When comparing the average range of earnings for full-time, year-round jobs, men make $46,367 while women make $35,745. That places women’s earnings at $10,622 less than their male counterparts. Women of color earn even less. It is easy to assume these issues are a thing of the past, and they have been addressed and should no longer be a cause for concern. That assumption is a many-sided issue. One cause of the gender wage gap is occupational segregation. Because of customs and socialization, women tend to choose employment from the same small pool of occupations that remain heavily concentrated with women. As studies have shown, the more women in the field, the less it pays, and even in these jobs – from doctors, lawyers and professional athletes to laundry workers and dishwashers – women are paid less than men. One of the discrepancies between male and female wages is that often, women don’t tend to negotiate their salaries. Studies have shown that a woman who negotiates wages is less likely to be hired than a man in the same position. Companies will go out of their way to avoid negotiations with women who do ask for equal pay. Example? Instead of raising wages for their nurses, hospitals will fix their salaries and bring in nurses from outside the country who are then paid lower wages. Right now in Congress there is a bill called the Fair Pay Act, which aims to reduce wage discrimination. The goal of the Fair Pay Act is to establish equal pay for equivalent work in areas that are dominated by women or minorities. This means that within a company, women or minority members doing work that is equally important to the employer, cannot be paid less. The Act makes exceptions for seniority, merit or quality and quantity of work and also exempts small businesses. Read more.
