(From startribune.com) — The University of Minnesota has won an $11 million grant from the Department of Defense to improve the training of combat medics. As part of the three-year project, researchers plan to “simulate the sights, sounds and smells of the battlefield” to study how medical personnel respond, according to Dr. Robert Sweet, the lead researcher. “We want them to feel like it’s real, so that they don’t freeze up the first time they have to perform these skills in combat.” Sweet, who directs simulation programs at the U’s medical school, will lead a consortium of military and civilian researchers across the country to study current training methods and explore ways to improve them, according to a university press release. The grant was announced Wednesday. Sweet said the project would focus on preparing medics for “some of the most critical injuries and trauma routinely seen on the battlefield,” including massive bleeding. Read more .

(From fosters.com) — U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) announced that New Hampshire has won a $675,314 competitive On-the-Job Training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The award, which will be administered by the New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development, will support OJT programs that help unemployed workers gain new skills to find and retain employment. Shaheen recently introduced legislation with U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) signed to expand OJT programs across the country. “On-the-Job Training programs are a proven way to put people back to work,” said Shaheen, a member of the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. “By teaching unemployed workers new skills, these programs not only help people find new jobs, but they help companies in emerging industries find qualified employees. Under the current system, On-the-Job Training programs are highly underutilized despite being highly effective. I will continue to work for passage of my legislation so that more states are encouraged to implement these programs.” Read more .

(From CapFlyer.com) WASHINGTON — As part of an interagency effort to support America’s veterans, the Labor Department announced $37 million in grants to provide job training for about 21,000 veterans, many of them homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis announced the grants June 1, awarded to continue successful programs into their second and third years. Twenty-two grants totaling more than $9 million will provide job training to about 4,000 veterans to help them succeed in civilian careers, Labor Department officials said. Those funds, provided through the Veterans Workforce Investment Program, emphasize training in “green” jobs related to energy efficiency and renewable energy, modern electric power development and clean vehicles. “Our veterans sacrifice so much for our country, so it is important that we provide assistance to them when they return home from active duty,” Secretary Solis said. “These grants will help veterans access the resources they need to find good jobs and build a bright future for themselves and their families.” Read more.
