The U.S. Department of Energy announced today that 34 projects in 27 states have been selected to receive $29 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to develop and expand weatherization training centers across the country. These projects will provide green job training for local workers in energy efficiency retrofitting and weatherization services. With this training, skilled workers can help expand the use of energy efficient practices in America’s homes and businesses. “A well-trained workforce will be a crucial part of America’s clean energy economy in the years ahead,” said Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman. “These investments in efficiency training programs will help build a foundation for long-term growth in America. Energy efficiency improves the competitiveness of our economy, benefits the environment, and puts Americans back to work.” Using innovative approaches to weatherization training and standardized training curricula, these projects will help prepare weatherization workers, supervisors, and inspectors to maintain a high degree of quality in weatherization projects and to work in the growing field of energy efficiency retrofits. The centers and programs will offer training using a combination of classroom, online, and hands-on learning tools. This funding will support the expansion of 8 existing weatherization training centers and the establishment of 26 new training centers, more than tripling the number of DOE-funded weatherization training centers nationally. The 34 programs announced today will significantly expand access to weatherization training, while improving the quality and consistency of training nationwide. These investments will continue to build on the Administration’s efforts to expand the green workforce and build a self-sustaining energy retrofit industry that creates high-quality jobs, while improving the environment and saving energy. (From NPR) It’s the time of year when college graduates plunge into the job market for the first time. Human resources managers say many recent grads are unprepared for the demands of the workplace. That’s the finding of a study by researchers at York College. The Pennsylvania school is trying to train its students in professionalism, as well as liberal arts. A few weeks before graduation, dozens of York College undergrads, in shorts and flip flops, packed a campus auditorium. They’ve come to see Laura Wand, the director of marketing for Johnson Controls, one of York’s biggest employers. “Dude, dress up. This isn’t the mall,” she tells the crowd. With her PowerPoint slides, Wand tries to impart some helpful advice from the real world. “Multi-tasking is a myth,” she says. “You got a great job. Turn off the cell phone, stop texting.” Wand is here at the invitation of York College’s Center for Professional Excellence. Researchers asked hundreds of business leaders and human resources managers across the country to assess the professionalism of recent college graduates. Read more.

In America today, women earn 22 percent less in wages than men every year. When comparing the average range of earnings for full-time, year-round jobs, men make $46,367 while women make $35,745. That places women’s earnings at $10,622 less than their male counterparts. Women of color earn even less. It is easy to assume these issues are a thing of the past, and they have been addressed and should no longer be a cause for concern. That assumption is a many-sided issue. One cause of the gender wage gap is occupational segregation. Because of customs and socialization, women tend to choose employment from the same small pool of occupations that remain heavily concentrated with women. As studies have shown, the more women in the field, the less it pays, and even in these jobs – from doctors, lawyers and professional athletes to laundry workers and dishwashers – women are paid less than men. One of the discrepancies between male and female wages is that often, women don’t tend to negotiate their salaries. Studies have shown that a woman who negotiates wages is less likely to be hired than a man in the same position. Companies will go out of their way to avoid negotiations with women who do ask for equal pay. Example? Instead of raising wages for their nurses, hospitals will fix their salaries and bring in nurses from outside the country who are then paid lower wages. Right now in Congress there is a bill called the Fair Pay Act, which aims to reduce wage discrimination. The goal of the Fair Pay Act is to establish equal pay for equivalent work in areas that are dominated by women or minorities. This means that within a company, women or minority members doing work that is equally important to the employer, cannot be paid less. The Act makes exceptions for seniority, merit or quality and quantity of work and also exempts small businesses. Read more.

(From the AP) NOT TOO TENSE: Despite layoffs, mounting workloads and slow wage growth, many employed Americans — especially men and urbanites — say tension at work isn’t at a full boil. In a recent survey, only 25 percent say their workplace is too tense, while a third report “almost no tension.” Meanwhile, 41 percent say the tension level in their workplace is appropriate. People from the Midwest/Plains and Northeast regions of the country were likeliest to feel on-the-job strain — 34 percent and 28 percent, respectively. Those in the South and West were apparently more at ease. Only 21 percent and 19 percent of survey repondents from those regions said their workplaces were too tense. Read more.
