Fine-Tuning the Perfect Employee

Posted on December 5th, 2011 in Unemployment News | Comments Off

(From The Wall Street Journal) — Faced with a dearth of skilled labor, more companies are taking employee education into their own hands. Unemployment figures are high, but finding workers with the right skills for the job—especially for highly specialized roles such as power plant technicians or laboratory chemists—remains a big challenge, many firms say. In a survey from Lloyd’s, the British insurance concern, U.S. executives considered lack of skilled workers one of the greatest risks their companies faced in 2012, second only to loss of customers. So rather than wait for the perfect candidates to walk through the door, companies have decided to school their in-house staff or train new hires who may lack the exact skills they were looking for. Yearly Reviews? Try Weekly

Posted on September 6th, 2011 in Unemployment News | Comments Off

(From The Wall Street Journal) — The status-update era is changing the annual performance review. With many younger workers used to instant feedback—from text messages to Facebook and Twitter updates—annual reviews seem too few and far between. So companies are adopting quarterly, weekly or even daily feedback sessions. Not surprisingly, Facebook Inc. exemplifies the trend. The social network’s 2,000 employees are encouraged to solicit and give small nuggets of feedback regularly, after meetings, presentations and projects. “You don’t have to schedule time with someone. It’s a 45-second conversation—’How did that go? What could be done better?” says Lori Goler, the Palo Alto, Calif., social-networking company’s vice president of human resources. More formal reviews happen twice a year. For most companies, employee reviews are still an annual rite of passage. Some 51% of companies conduct formal performance reviews annually, while 41% of firms do semi-annual appraisals, according to a 2011 survey of 500 companies by the Corporate Executive Board Co., a research and advisory firm. (From The Wall Street Journal) — When you walk into an Apple store, every experience, from the welcome greetings issued to customers to the things running on the demo computers and iPads, is carefully planned. In an attempt to understand the Apple Store mystique, the WSJ’s Yukari Kane hung out in stores, talked to former and current employees, and reviewed confidential training manuals. In doing so, she found out just how carefully Apple thinks about the smallest details. As Kane explained to Stacey Delo in an exclusive WSJ video, employee training is paramount. A 2007 employee training manual has the stores’ “steps of service” laid out in the acronym APPLE where A stands for “Approach customers with a personalized warm welcome,” P means “probe politely to understand all the customer’s needs, ” etc. Employees are even trained on what not to say. “They avoid saying the word, ‘unfortunately,’” said Kane. “If a customer mispronounces the name of a product they are taught never to correct them.” Read more .
