Motivation starts with appreciating people and when Frederick Herzberg discovered the dichotomy that the things that make people satisfied and motivated on the job are different from the things that make them dissatisfied the simplicity of the motivation picture vanished. People are typically unhappy about insufficient pay or an uncomfortable work environment, or “dumb” policies that are restraining them. While these environmental factors can be demotivating, even if they are managed brilliantly, fixing these factors will not motivate people to work harder or smarter. It turns out that people are motivated by interesting work, challenge, increasing responsibility, and recognition for hitting those tough goals.
